With international travel largely discouraged during the COVID-19 pandemic, major Asian cities have turned their focus to domestic travel to boost economic spending. In the Lion City, a $45 million dollar SingapoRediscovers campaign has been launched by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and other agencies, to attract residents to take a local holiday—cheekily dubbed “Singapoliday.”
Locals can look forward to staycation packages, heartland tours, dining promotions, and more. Aside from activities at popular tourist attractions such as Gardens by the Bay and Sentosa’s Skyline Luge, there’ll be specially curated events offered in partnership with communities such as photographers, foodies, as well as nature and heritage groups to help locals discover hidden gems in the city.
While domestic travel won’t be able to make up for the shortfall in tourist spending, which totalled $27.7 billion last year, this campaign will hopefully channel part of this unused travel budge to local businesses—some of which are struggling to survive during these trying times.
